Black and white posters on a concrete wall with messages protesting against everything, including the phrase "I SAY NO TO EVERYTHING".

This project utilizes a wall of dots as the foundation for creating 21 visually engaging posters that promote the Whitney Museum exhibition. Each design reinterprets the dot motif in unique ways—through rhythm, scale, and composition—to capture the exhibition’s energy and visual identity. The goal was to turn a simple classroom exercise into a professional-level campaign that draws attention, evokes curiosity, and connects viewers to the museum’s creative spirit.

“I was skeptical at first—just dots? But they turned out to be way more expressive than I imagined.”

A poster advertising an art exhibit titled 'Nothing White Nope' at the Museum of Art. The exhibit runs from October 7, 2023, to December 25, 2023, open from 10:30 AM to 6 PM. The poster features a background of scattered orange and brown circular patterns on a white surface, with some of the paper peeling off.

Drawing Process

The project began with a simple in-class exercise where everyone drew dots on the wall—random, spontaneous, and unplanned. What started as a chaotic collection of marks slowly turned into a shared visual language. I photographed and reinterpreted these patterns, transforming them into graphic compositions.

Poster Design

The poster design visualizes the connection between music and typography through rhythm, balance, and motion. Dynamic layouts, overlapping shapes, and flowing letterforms evoke the feeling of a live orchestra—where sound becomes form and typography turns into performance.

Three black and white posters for Whitney Museum of American Art exhibitions. The first features numerous black handprints with the text "I SAY NO TO EVERYTHING" at the bottom. The second features a gray and black marbled snake-like shape with the text "TO EVERYTHING I SAY NO" in the top right. The third shows a black and white photo of a surface with stones and the text "I SAY NO TO EVERYTHING" curved along the surface, with exhibition details at the bottom.

“Somewhere between the first dot and the last, I realized this project wasn’t about perfection—it was about finding rhythm in randomness.”

Reflection

This project reminded me how creativity can come from the simplest beginnings. Turning a wall of hand-drawn dots into a cohesive poster series taught me to find beauty in the process and the value of collaboration. If I could redo it, I’d explore more refined visual systems and experiment with pacing across the series—but I’d still keep that sense of spontaneity and curiosity that made the project so unexpectedly rewarding.
